Safe Home Remedies for Cough in Children

Coughing is usually triggered due to irritation in the lining of the windpipe, and it happens when the child’s body is fighting off an illness. 

Though it is a common occurrence, continuous coughing can be irritating and can cause discomfort in the throat especially for children. Coughing can lead to sleepless nights for children and helplessness for the parents. While there are a lot of medicines available for curing cough, it is best to try out some home remedies which are known to do wonders when it comes to controlling and curbing cough in children.

 

1. Honey

Honey is known to have anti-microbial agents that help the body to fight cold. The sweet taste of honey enhances saliva production which in turn helps in thinning mucus. The ideal way to administer honey is to mix one tablespoon in hot water and squeeze the fresh lemon juice in it. There are a lot of other ingredients that use honey to make an ideal syrup for treating cough.

 

2. Ginger

Ginger is an excellent home remedy for fighting cold as it is known to have anti-viral properties.  Mix honey to counter the strong taste of ginger before giving it to your child.

Give two tablespoons of the following mixture to get relief from a cough:

  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of crushed or grated ginger with one tablespoon of honey.
  • Mix a table spoon of apple cider vinegar and honey to this and add two tablespoons of water to make a syrup.

 

3. Steam

Steam therapy is a good option especially if your child has a blocked nose and breathing passage, accompanied by a wet cough. The warmth of the steam will help loosen the mucus and let it out easily. You can create and administer steam in the following manner:

  • Boil water in a bowl or a tub and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or vapour rub into the water. Allow your child to inhale the steam from the nose.
  • Let the hot water run in the shower with closed doors. This will fill the room with steam which can be inhaled by the child.

 

4. Vapour Rub

Vapour rubs have herbal oils that can give you temporary relief from a cough and cold and can clear out the mucus from your nostrils. Vapour rubs also provide warmth that will help your child sleep.

 

5. Give Warm Soups and Liquids

Giving something warm to your child to sip on continuously will help to loosen the mucus and to remove it from the body. Warm liquids will also give comfort to your child in case of cold.

 

6. Milk and Turmeric

An age-old home remedy for instant relief from a sore throat and cough, turmeric in milk is also a good home remedy for whooping cough. Turmeric has antiseptic properties which are effective in treating viral infections.

Just add a teaspoon of turmeric to warm milk and give it to your child every night before sleeping until the coughing subsides.

 

7. Tulsi Tea

Offer lukewarm tulsi concoction/tea to your baby. You can make this and store in a bottle and keep giving throughout the day.

 

8. Mulethi

Give your child a piece of liquorice (mulethi) to keep inside the mouth. Mulethi has many antibacterial properties which help to cure a child’s cough and cold. You can boil the mulethi in water and give this water to your child to drink.

9. Ensure Ample Rest

It is important to let your child rest when they are suffering from a cough as it helps heal the body faster. The stress of travelling and sitting in school can slow down the healing process, and the coughing can also spread germs to the other children. Proper rest will also help your kid recover faster from the loss of energy due to the infection.
